We may as well cut right to the chase. You found this site when you came looking for the local spirits store in Jaco, Costa Rica.
Here are the details...
Liquor Stores:
Licorera Jaco -
This is one of the larger liquor stores in Jaco. They have most anything you can want and are open long hours. They sell wines, rum,
whisky, local beers (cervaza), coolers ect. The are located on the main street south of Jaco Centre (POP's ice cream store) across
the street from the electronics store 'Importadora Monge' and before the bridge that crosses the small creek (the one near the town
office). If asking in a Spanish person they will tell you it's 'frente Importadora Monge'. If you keep heading south on the main
road you will see it on the left side of the road.
Super Las Olas -
This is a small grocery and liquor store run by 'Flory' and her husband. It is just north of center Jaco by the small creek and near
'Centro Commercial El Galeone' and Hotel Tangeri. It has a basic selection to choose from and is more convienient for some tourists
that are using a hotel nearby.
Grocery Stores:
Mas x Menos -
This is one of the bigger grocery store chains in all Costa Rica owned and operated by Walmart. Yes, the same store
you love to hate in the states. Mas x Menos sells a lot of groceries like meat, chicken, veggies, fresh fruit, ect.
A basic pharmacy can be found here but prescriptions cannot be filled in the store, a liquor section,
souvenirs and a little of everything. Mas x Menos is located in the center of Jaco across from Farmacia Jaco.
They also have a private parking lot with security guard.
Maxi Bodega -
This is another Walmart owned store. Maxi Bodega is located in the seccond entry to Jaco (Por la Costanera). This store
is the bigges one in all Jaco area. The prices are equal too or a little less the Mas x Menos. More selection and better product
some times. It has a big parking lot. The good thing about Maxi Bodega is that it is located outside of Jaco Center. Less traffic,
a big route, and more space. It's like a super store in Costa Rica wiht more selection and goods then you can be found in any
other store in the Jaco area.
Mega Super -
This particular grocery store is owned and operated by diferent owner I think. Mega Super is the third or fourth
biggest grocery store chain in Costa Rica. This grocery store is a little cheaper then Mas x Menos and Maxi Bodega
and they have local products and familiarity. They have a little bit of everything. The store is located in a good place
inside in a little plaza, next to KFC and in front of the hotel Tangeri. It is close to the banks and restaurants.
Super Las Chancletas -
Las chancletas is located in the north area of Jaco at the junction of the first road leading into Jaco and the main
road running through it. This particular grocery store is very basic. They have just the things you need to keep you.
They have stuff like water, milk, juice, bread ect. They are one of the many small convenience stores around town.
The prices are the goverment regulated so there is little fluctuation from the big stores.
Super Jaco 2000 -
This grocery store is located along the Costanera well outside Jaco center. I use to live across from this store.
They have lots of local product and also every morning they have fresh bread. The people are very nice frendly. Their
prices are the same or less then the other stores. I recommend you give them a try as you can help support the smaller
merchants and the poorer people this way.
Banks:
The Banks of Jaco -
The best place to do your banking in Jaco (and area) is Banco de Costa Rica (in my humble opinion).
It is located along the main road in Jaco across from the Best Western Hotel by the small ice cream
vendor, by the bus line that runs from San Jose to Jaco and back several times per day, and by the Pizza
Hut. It is a great bank, a little but busy but still the best. They have several options for account
types, are government owned (at least partly) and regulated as well. A couple of the tellers can speak a
little English and are always willing to help and try and translate for you. If you have a problem with
your account 'Marvin' can help you out. He is like the general account manager. Banco de Costa Rica has
branches throughout the country and ATM's all over as well. If you drop in tell 'Marvin' that Gerry and
Ilsa say 'Hola'.
Hotels:
Hotels In General -
In general Jaco has a lot of hotels; American style and 'Tico' type. Big, small, cabins, condos, different prices,
and quality. Hotels of five ,four, three, stars ect. Costa Rica Star rating system is quite a bit different from
the North American standard so don't get confused! Most of these hotels are clean, the service is good, the food
is decent. The food can vary though so be prepared. Security usually depends on whether or not the hotel is located
near the ocean or in a place with good view that can draw more cash to ensure they can afford security. It's a look
before you buy system at best. :-)
